Westport Winery’s Bordello Blonde earned a score of 95-points, a double gold medal, and best of class at the West Coast Wine Competition. Held in Santa Rose, California, on February 5 and 6, this event is held concurrently with the East Coast Wine Competition. There were 1100 wines entered in this international competition with the winners facing off in the East Meets West Challenge.
Winemaker Dana Roberts said, “My job is to honor the grapes and find out what they want to be, how they can best be expressed.” The grapes for Bordello Blonde were grown at Red Willow Vineyard, one of Washington State’s most acclaimed farms owned by Mike and Karen Sauer and their family. “We are fortunate to have long-term relationships with other families in this industry who with us strive to craft top-tier wines to represent our state,” Roberts said.
A portion of the proceeds from each of Westport’s wines are donated to local charitable organizations. The Aberdeen Museum of History is the designated recipient from this wine. Additionally, each is commemorated by a sculpture by a local artist in the winery’s 15-acre display garden. Sherryl Jackson is the artist who create the ephemeral fairy for this wine in the four-tier Meditation Garden. And each wine has a unique label. Bordello features an original drawing by winery co-founder Kim Roberts.
Ancient Mariner, a pear Riesling blend, also earned a gold medal at this competition. Like Bordello it features grapes from Red Willow Vineyard. A portion of the proceeds from this wine benefits Coastal Animal Rescue and Adoption (CARA). The label was painted by Blain Roberts surf partner Darryl Easter.
Westport has won over 500 medals from international competitions in their ten-year history. “With our remote location and unique approach to winemaking we want to make sure that our guests know they are getting top quality wines,” Roberts stated as the reason the team works so hard to garner this recognition. “Our winery is that place in the middle of nowhere that people learn about through word of mouth. My family has created a destination that is unlike any other in the region.”
