Savor NW Medals Galore

Westport Winery earned numerous medals at the Savor NW wine competition held last weekend in Cannon Beach, Oregon.

Captain Gray Gewurztraminer opened with a gold medal. This wine was crafted with grapes from Red Willow Vineyard in the Yakima Valley AVA on vines that were planted 40 years ago. Winemaker Dana Roberts said, “These are probably our most historic grapes since they were planted from cuttings from Jerry Bookwalter, which is cool since his son, John, is my mentor.” A portion of the proceeds from Captain Gray benefits the Grays Harbor Symphony. A sculpture by Westport ceramicist Kimmi Kerns commemorating this wine is located in the winery’s Beauty From Ashes Garden. Another Westport artist, Barbara Sampson, painted the watercolor of the winery that graces the label. The winery suggests this vintage be paired with a Winemaker’s Club sandwich in their Sea Glass Grill.

Peaches On The Beaches, a voluptuous blend of peach and Reisling, also garnered a gold medal. These grapes, too, were harvested at Red Willow Vineyard. A portion of the proceeds of this wine, described in the tasting notes as “summer pie, rich, refreshing, juicy, and naked” benefits the Grays Harbor Breast Cancer Alliance. The watercolor label was painted by Darryl Easter of Camarillo, California. The sculpture featuring two lovely ladies sunbathing on an imaginary beach was crafted by Clallam Bay artist Lora Malakoff. In addition to food pairings, the winery offers music pairings on their tasting notes. For this wine the song “I Wish I Knew You” by the Revivalists is the recommended listening.

Martime (a sparkling Riesling), Surfer (a varietal Syrah), Bog Berry Blush (a cranberry Gewurztraminer blend), and Duckleberry Grunt (a blueberry Gewurztraminer blend) all earned silver medals.
